In 1987, when John Eaton’s wife, the distinguished mezzo-soprano Nelda Nelson, was in the midst of graduate studies in Latin American and Peninsular Literature, she began an in-depth exploration of El Divino Narciso, the allegorical play about the love of the Divine Narcissus (Jesus) to Human Nature, by the extraordinary Mexican poet and polymath Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1648-1695). This initiated a period of sustained creativity in the composer, who by the year 1998 had created two versions of El Divino Narciso for voices and instruments, (one for dancing and one for concert format), and settings of three of Sor Juana’s sonnets, her long poem El Sueño, and her song in Nahuatl, Tocotín.
This anthology in two CDs compiles this special project in the output of John Eaton, in performances by some of the most exciting vocalists and instrumentalists devoted to today’s contemporary music, produced by Aquava New Music Studio under the direction of conductor Carmen-Helena Téllez.
The CD was issued on March 30 and is available already in both in physical and digital versions on CDBaby.com and soon through all the major outlets. It was presented to the public at the John Eaton’s Legacy in Symphony Space, on March 30.
